Division I is responsible for processing and preservation
of records from the period of XII century to 1945. These resources refer
to large cities of the Gdańsk Pomerania - namely Gdańsk and Elblag, as
well as to smaller Pomeranian towns, villages and cloisters. The most
valuable part of the holdings of the Archives of the City of Gdańsk are
reports from the local Parliament, and reports of Gdańsk deputies from
the sessions of the Polish Parliament from XVI to XVIII centuries. The
Division also runs genealogical research based on the Prussian public
registers for people searching for their roots.
Division II is responsible for processing and preserving
records from 1945 to 2001. Records processed by this Division refer to
the most recent history of Gdańsk and the south-eastern part of the Gdańsk
Pomerania. The holdings contain valuable materials such as the records
of City Boards, State Repatriation Office, Voivodeship Office and the
Voivodeship Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party. The records
of the Polish United Workers’ Party, taken over in 1990, are a goldmine
of information for the researchers of post-war history of the region.
The objective of Division III is to provide access
to holdings of the State Archive in Gdańsk. The records can be accessed
in the Reference Room as well as borrowed outside in case of law suits,
public prosecutor’s investigations and investigations run by the Institute
of the National Memory. The Division also holds the up-to-date list of
the holdings of the Archive and controls the microfilming of documents.
Microfilms are used to secure the most precious holdings of the Archive
in a black-and-white photographic format. The Division also runs the Reference
Library holding an interesting collection of old prints referring to the
history of Gdańsk and Gdańsk Pomerania.
Division IV controls and advices the institutions
which in future will turn their holdings over to the State Archive in
Gdańsk. The objective of the Division is to determine the volume of records
to be taken over and to consult these institutions regarding the proper
processing of records as well as to assist in training archival personnel
of state and local administration institutions. Consulting is of vital
importance for the defining and preserving valuable resources for historians
engaged in research of the history of our region.
Gdynia Division may be proud of having one of the
most modern, largest and best equipped archival storage rooms in Poland.
The Division stores records from the period of XVII century to 2001. The
records come from northern towns of our Voivodeship as well as from Prussian
courts of law, archives of the City of Gdynia, Polish post-war local administration
and political parties. The Division runs a preservation laboratory serving
all other divisions of the State Archive in Gdańsk.
