State and local administration records

The holdings of the State Archive in Gdańsk contain precious records of state and local administration: Treasury Department for Regierung Marienwerder (Kwidzyn) dating from 1772 to 1808, High Presidium of West Prussia (Ober-Presidium der Provinz West Preußen) in Gdańsk from 1815 to 1919, local state administration office (Regierung Danzig) in Gdańsk and Kwidzyń from 1808 to 1944, Polish authorities in the Free City of Gdańsk and the authorities of the Free City of Gdańsk, and from the post-war period the records of the Voivodeship Office and the Presidium of the People's Voivodeship Council, State Repatriation Office, and various local administration institutions for small towns and villages from 1950 to 1975, public registries and records of post-1990 administration. Also the holdings contain records of special state administration offices. The influence of the Polish state on artists, journalists and writers is very interestingly illustrated in the collection of the Voivodeship Bureau of Control of Press, Publications and Performances in Gdańsk from 1955 to 1969. Administration records from XVIII to XX centuries very broadly document administrative partitions of Pomerania, very often modified due to frequent political changes. The records enable the research of those changes and their influence on the social life of Pomerania.
