Records of the Town of Elblag

The holdings of the Town Archive in Elblag were evacuated to Lower Saxony in 1944. They were found there, hidden in salt mines, by a Polish military mission. In spring 1947 four railway cars with the saved holdings were brought to the State Archive in Gdansk.
The records of the town of Elblag contain documents, volumes of correspondence, records of the municipal office and plans of Elblag and its surroundings dating from XIII century to 1945. The holdings refer to the political and economic history of Elblag, including its relations with other countries. Documents granting privileges for Elblag by Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order and by Polish Kings and dukes are the most precious part of the holdings. Other interesting objects are original medieval matrices of seals used by the town of Elblag. Materials and records to the history of Elblag town from other archives and libraries are described partly also in the "Baltic Connections" Project Database (keyword="Elblag").
